US Pain Care – Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program (IOP)

A New Approach to Treating Chronic Pain & Opioid Use Disorder

Our Intensive Outpatient Treatment Program (IOP) is a multidisciplinary initiative designed to help patients suffering from chronic pain in conjunction with opioid use disorder. Our evidence-based program provides a comprehensive path to recovery, integrating medical management, behavioral health support, and alternative therapies to foster long-term healing.

Meet Dr. Paul Lynch, CEO of Pain Arizona

A double board-certified pain care physician and anesthesiologist with 17 years of experience, Dr. Lynch is dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based care for even the most complex chronic pain conditions.

Is IOP Right For Me?

Many individuals suffering from chronic pain are prescribed opioids as a treatment option, however, some individuals develop opioid use disorder as a result,  leading to a cycle that is difficult to escape. Our IOP Program is designed to address tri-diagnosis—the intersection of chronic pain, substance use disorder, and mental health challenges—through a structured, patient-centered treatment plan.

What Makes Pain Arizona Different?

The Path to Purpose: 7 Steps to Treatment

Our program is structured around 7 essential steps that guide patients from dependency to long-term wellness.

  1. Establish Support System – Anyone who is dealing with opioid use disorder starts by creating a support team around them.
  2. Substance Use Treatment – Utilizing medication-assisted treatment (MAT) when appropriate.
  3. Mental Health Therapy – Treating co-occurring psychiatric conditions with evidence-based care.
  4. Chronic Pain Management – Offering evidence-based and multidisciplinary pain treatment options.
  5. Housing Support – Helping patients establish stable and supportive living conditions.
  6. Employment Assistance – Providing resources to regain financial independence.
  7. Dream Again – Encouraging long-term personal growth and well-being.

Stages of Treatment

Stage 1: Diagnosis (Weeks 1-3)

> Full intake and assessment with a pain management provider, psychiatrist, and addictionologist.

> Diagnostics such as MRI, EMG, and comprehensive evaluations to create personalized treatment plans.

> Integration across all specialties for a coordinated approach.

Stage 2: Stabilization (Weeks 4-8)

> Chronic pain treatment and medication management.

> Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), biofeedback, family therapy, and group support.

> MAT, outpatient detox services, and alternative hands-on therapies such as acupuncture, massage, yoga, and physiotherapy.

Stage 3: Transition (Weeks 9-10)

> Goal setting for life after treatment: “Dream Again.”

> Continued support from case managers to ensure a successful transition.

> Housing and social stability assistance.

Stage 4: Follow-Up (Week 10 and Beyond)

> Ongoing engagement via our RTM mobile app, biweekly case manager outreach, and scheduled follow-up visits.

> Continued medical and behavioral support as needed.

> Long-term wellness planning to prevent relapse and support lifelong recovery.

Proven Success: The Research Behind Our Model

Our approach is based on data-driven case studies that have proven the effectiveness of intensive case management and coordinated interdisciplinary care:

> Camden Initiative: Reduced ER visits by 40% and hospital charges by 56%.

> California Initiative: Implemented a case management intervention that led to a 66% reduction in inpatient medical costs.
